Transit contract extension – guarantee of Ukraine’s and Europe’s security

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with new Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz and with President of France Emmanuel Macron. The talks took place on the sidelines of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Brussels.

Reference was made, in particular, to energy security and possibilities to enhance cooperation in the energy sector. Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine counts on German support to maintain gas transit through the territory of Ukraine after 2024.

Gas TSO of Ukraine has repeatedly stressed that the best guarantee of the energy security for both Ukraine and Europe is the extension of the transit contract through the territory of Ukraine. This view is shared by senior US and EU officials, who have repeatedly stated that Ukraine should remain a transit country.

As Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal noted earlier, the extension of the contract for 15 years is the ideal timeframe for Ukraine.

For his part, General Director of GTSOU Sergiy Makogon emphasized that the Company is ready to extend the transit contract now. That would be the key to minimizing possible risks to energy security throughout Europe.

“Our partners in the EU should take into account the obvious advantages of the Ukrainian GTS and consider the prospect of guaranteed, non-politicized, stable transportation of gas to European countries. Our system fully meets all the requirements of the European legislation, it is a reliable and time-tested infrastructure with unique backup capacities, which today is the best guarantee of safe transit,” said Sergiy Makogon.
