Ukraine created a new legislative and regulatory framework in 2024 to facilitate the functioning of the biomethane market, namely allowing to open the possibility for its export to Europe. However, the sustainable development of the renewable gas market necessitates the active involvement of European partners.

This statement was made by Pavel Stanchak, the advisor of the representative office of the GTS Operator of Ukraine in the EU, during a speech at the ReBuild Ukraine conference as part of the discussion panel titled “Renewable energy as an integral part of the security and economic strength of the energy system of Ukraine.”

“The possibility of exporting biomethane from Ukraine to Europe has spurred the development of this market segment. The Ukrainian GTS received its first commercial volumes of biomethane in September of this year. However, for a full-scale and large-scale launch of the market, certain procedures need to be settled, including the harmonization of biomethane certification approaches in the EU and the launch of the UDB (Union Database for Biofuels space – note),” noted Pavel Stanchak.

Another project that OGTSU is involve in, the Central European Hydrogen Corridor (CEHC), was also brought to attention by Pavil Stanchak. Important to remember that the Company, along with GTS operators of Slovakia (Eustream) and the Czech Republic (NET4GAS) intends to apply for the designation of “Project of Common Interest” (PCI/PMI) from the European Commission. This status enables them to receive partial financing for implementation and expedited approval of projects, ultimately speeding up the construction of hydrogen infrastructure to meet the growing demand for hydrogen across Europe.
