The EU’s decarbonization potential and anticipated challenges in biomethane cross-border trade

During the World Renewable Fuels Conference in Berlin, Kateryna Kovalenko, Head of the Strategy Division at the “Gas TSO of Ukraine”, highlighted a key issue for the Ukrainian biomethane producers. The discussion revolved around the expansion of the European biomethane market and its potential for further growth.

“There is no state financial support for the development of biomethane production in Ukraine. The only incentive for the industry’s development in Ukraine is the export of biomethane to the EU. The authorization of biomethane exports in Ukraine triggered a rapid rise in producer engagement. The harmonization of rules and requirements across the EU countries would significantly facilitate cross-border trade in biomethane,” said Kateryna Kovalenko.

After the possibility of exporting biomethane became available, two biomethane plants (with an average annual capacity of about 3 mcm per year) commenced commercial supply of biomethane to the gas grid. However, exporting biomethane is currently complicated due to the lack of unification of international trade standards. The use of voluntary certification schemes (PoS, such as proof of sustainability) partially solves this problem.
