The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) with IT equipment and solutions to support and back up its day-to-day operations and dispatching processes.

Funded by the U.S. Government, the USAID Energy Security Project procured and delivered a mobile data center to the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU). This data center supports GTSOU’s dispatching operations in ensuring a smooth gas supply to Ukrainians. Provided with a chassis, the data center can be easily transported to any location in an emergency.

The IT equipment and software also cover vital functionalities including online and offline hydraulic modeling tools for various “what-if” scenarios. These tools aim to optimize network operations, manage gas consumption, detect leaks, and improve data transparency, reliability, efficiency, safety, and resilience in response to potential threats. This assistance helps GTSOU take proactive measures to mitigate risks and respond rapidly to the changing needs and emergencies within the gas transmission infrastructure.

The U.S. Ambassador Bridget A. Brink stated: “The U.S. Government reaffirms its commitment to keep Ukraine’s gas storage and transmission system operational and sustainable in the face of Russia’s brutal missile and drone attacks. The IT equipment provided by USAID will enable Ukraine’s Gas transmission system operator to monitor pipelines in real-time, 24/7. This enables quick reactions to damaged infrastructure on the frontline, optimizing gas transportation across Ukraine. This will help deliver affordable, reliable, and secure energy not only to Ukrainian schools, hospitals, and businesses, but to Ukraine’s partners across Europe.”

The IT solutions will also help Ukraine continue gas transmission despite the anticipated end of Russia’s gas transit through Ukraine. The IT solutions deployed enable GTSOU to assess the current situation and limitations, ensure better physical and commercial balancing on the gas transmission system, navigate various operation scenarios, and select the best technical configuration for the gas transmission system in order to make informed decisions.

Chief Executive Officer of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine Dmytro Lyppa said, “The assistance provided by USAID to GTSOU is essential for the short-term sustainability of the GTSOU and necessary for the long-term development of the gas market in Ukraine. A wide range of IT equipment and solutions USAID provides will help GTSOU take proactive measures to prevent problems, mitigate risks, and respond rapidly to changing demands and emergencies within the gas transmission infrastructure.”

With USAID assistance, Ukraine’s Gas Transmission System Operator is now better able to increase its efficiency and successfully respond to the challenges Russia’s war poses, which in the long-term will support Ukraine’s gas transmission system in integrating with the European Union.
