Foreign traders transport gas to Ukraine despite the war

Foreign customers continue transporting natural gas to Ukraine despite war-related challenges. In January-February 2024, over 60 mcm were delivered to Ukraine, mostly in the short-haul mode. In addition, according to the auction platforms, traders are actively booking capacities of GTS operators of neighbouring states to transport gas to Ukraine.

General Director of the Gas TSO of Ukraine Dmytro Lyppa noted that the early start of foreign gas transportation to Ukraine for storage was a positive assessment of the Company’s operation.

“We have confirmed the positive conclusions of last year’s stress test of Ukraine’s GTS and UGS, initiated by the Ministry of Energy, with stable and reliable work this winter. GTSOU has proven to European traders that it is a predictable and reliable partner that fulfils its obligations accurately and promptly, making an important contribution to Europe’s energy security,” – Dmytro Lyppa added.

At the initiative of the Ministry of Energy, another stress test of Ukraine’s gas infrastructure is currently underway. Its purpose is to confirm the stable operation of the GTS and UGS amid potential bombings and cessation of Russian gas transit.

Let it be reminded that in 2023, GTSOU and Ukrtransgaz conducted, on the initiative of Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy, a stress test of the gas transmission system and underground storage facilities. As a result, during the 2023/24 season, Ukraine received over 3 bcm of gas in the customs warehouse and short-haul modes from the European direction.
