GTSOU welcomes the move towards active development of biomethane production in Ukraine

At the opening of the meeting dedicated to the development of renewable gases Valerii Bezus, Head of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency, said that Ukraine is coming to the finish line in adopting a resolution to create a biomethane registry.

The government’s approval of the procedure for the functioning of the biomethane registry and the mechanism for providing Biomethane guarantees of origin is one of the key steps towards full development of the production of this type of fuel in Ukraine, as well as for its export to Europe. In accordance with the law and after the adoption of the relevant regulation, the State Agency on Energy Efficiency will maintain the Biomethane Registry and issue guarantees and certificates of biomethane origin.

Ukraine is confidently moving on the European path, including in terms of innovations for the introduction of renewable gases. The country’s integration with the gas market and the electricity market of the EU proves how successful and promising such cooperation is. The next step is the joint development of the gas market, which can effectively replace natural gas. Gazprom’s increasing gas pressure has demonstrated that an expedited resolution of regulatory and financial issues related to the functioning of the renewable gas market will help strengthen the European region’s energy security in the shortest possible time and overcome the challenges that exist today.

Gas TSO of Ukraine actively supports and encourages the development of renewable gases in Ukraine, and in the future is ready to provide biomethane transportation services, in particular to Europe. Our Company can join the projects that help realize the potential of this type of fuel. Ukraine can export biomethane to the EU through existing gas pipelines, which does not require investments in upgrading or creating additional infrastructure

«The best gift from Europe to Ukraine would be the recognition of our biomethane production potential and active participation in relevant projects. Already in the near future, Ukraine will have unhindered access to the markets in Europe: mutual «exchange» and joint implementation of ambitious plans for decarbonization ensure that the future energy security of the EU and Ukraine will be impossible to undermine», – said Olga Bielkova, Director on Government and International Affairs.
