The future of biomethane and hydrogen: Dmytro Lyppa discussed the role of Ukrainian GTS

On March 12, GTSOU’s General Director Dmytro Lyppa took part in the online discussion “Infrastructure for future fuels: regulation, investments and subsidies” organized within the framework of eFlame Infocus series.

During his speech, Mr. Lyppa spoke about Ukraine’s potential in the production of biomethane and hydrogen, as well as about its impact on the development of gas infrastructure. He also spoke about the potential geography of biomethane and hydrogen production in Ukraine, and how Ukraine’s GTS can play the key role in their transportation to Europe.

“In case of biomethane transportation, reliance on the existing gas infrastructure is more feasible than other solutions that may present an array of economic, environmental or technical disadvantages. In case of hydrogen transportation, GTSOU is part of the Central European Hydrogen Corridor initiative designed to transmit Ukrainian-produced fuel from the country’s west all the way to German customers. Last year, the European Commission put the initiative on the list of projects of common and mutual interest for the modernization of the European energy system,” Mr. Lyppa shared.

Finally, Mr. Lyppa focused on the existing challenges that should be addressed when it comes to the development of biomethane and hydrogen sectors. These primarily include the EU’s current regulations that do not recognize imported biomethane and biomethane-based fuels in the Union database.
