Ukrainian GTS provides more than 100 transportation routes between gas storage facilities of Ukraine (UGS) and European borders, – Dmytro Lyppa

With the return of the spread between summer and winter gas prices on European markets, the attractiveness of using Ukrainian gas infrastructure in the 2023/2024 season is increasing. However, to have time to take advantage of such conditions in the gas market, traders need to act promptly.

During a meeting with international customers of gas transportation services, GTSOU specialists, together with colleagues from the gas storage operator “Ukrtransgaz,” representatives of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the National Energy Regulator, presented the conditions of gas transportation and storage in Ukraine in the new gas season.

Ukraine offers European traders to use more than ten bcm of underground gas storage facilities near the country’s western border. And the flexible and reliable gas transportation system provides more than 100 transportation routes between the UGS and European borders.

“Ukrainian gas infrastructure has proven over many years that it is a reliable part of the European market, fulfilling obligations of which are not hindered by energy crises or even military aggression. We have analyzed various gas transportation routes between Ukrainian storage facilities and European borders. The reliability of each route is guaranteed by a large number of connections between UGS and GTS, as well as the presence of at least two pipelines with each adjacent operator of the TSOs of the EU countries,” said Dmytro Lyppa, GTSOU CEO.

He reminded the participants that in 2022-2023, GTSOU worked hard to expand opportunities for cross-border trade. That work made it possible to offer now 54 mcm per day of firm capacities at the entrance to the Ukrainian GTS, which can be used to pump gas into Ukrainian storage facilities. At the same time, the output capacity, which can be used for re-export, amounts to more than 200 mcm daily.

Andrii Prokofiev, Head of The Division of Cooperation with Clients of GTSOU, pointed out the significant filling of European gas storage facilities and the opportunities offered to the European market by the ample capacity of UGS.

“Given the significant spread between summer and winter gas prices in Europe and competitive tariffs for gas transportation and storage in Ukraine, we see that traders can benefit from using our infrastructure while increasing Europe’s energy security. And the sooner they start pumping, the more supplies they will have in storage. That is why we offer the participants of the European gas market already to order gas transportation and storage services in Ukraine,” said Andrii Prokofiev.

Roman Maliutin, the head of the Gas Storage Operator of Ukraine, confirmed the readiness to inject large volumes of gas:

“Ukrtransgaz has enough capacity to take large volumes of gas even during the peak periods of the heating season. The capacities of the cross-border connection points already make it possible to import millions of cubic meters of gas to Ukraine, and Ukrtransgaz continues to offer customers the opportunity to store it in the customs warehouse for 1,095 days without paying taxes and customs payments”.
